My Favorite Mid-Michigan Seasonal Events

One of the things I love most about living and working in Mid-Michigan is that every season brings something to look forward to. After more than 20 years exploring every corner of Genesee, Oakland, Livingston, Lapeer, and Shiawassee Counties — partly for the joy of it, partly because helping clients find a home means helping them find a community — I've developed a personal calendar of events and traditions that I return to year after year. These are the seasonal moments that make Mid-Michigan feel like home, and the ones I love sharing with clients who are new to the area.

Spring: Fresh Starts and Farmers Markets

Spring in Mid-Michigan is a slow, beautiful unfolding. The snow melts, the crocuses push through, and suddenly the farmers markets reopen. After a long Michigan winter, that first market day feels like a celebration.

Fenton Farmers Market

The Fenton Farmers Market, running Saturday mornings from May through October along Leroy Street in downtown Fenton, is one of my absolute favorites. Fresh produce from regional farms, locally baked breads and pastries, handmade soaps and candles, and flower bouquets that make your kitchen feel like spring. I love walking through here on a Saturday morning — it's community at its best. You'll run into neighbors, discover a new jam vendor, and leave with more than you planned to buy. Howell Sunday Farmers' Market

A bit farther south in Livingston County, the Howell Sunday Farmers' Market is one of the largest and most popular markets in the region. It runs May through October and features dozens of vendors offering everything from organic produce and farm-raised meats to artisan breads and Michigan-made products. The atmosphere is lively, the quality is exceptional, and it's a great excuse to explore downtown Howell's shops and restaurants afterward.

Oakland County Farmers Market

For buyers in the Oakland County communities I serve — Clarkston, Lake Orion, Holly — the Oakland County Farmers Market in Waterford is a year-round option. Operating May through December, it's one of the few markets in the region that extends into the holiday season, making it a great spot for Thanksgiving planning and early holiday shopping.

Spring Planting and Garden Events

Beyond the markets, spring is when the Mid-Michigan gardening community comes alive. Many local nurseries and garden centers host planting workshops, native plant sales, and spring open houses. It's a wonderful time to explore the landscaping potential of a new home or get your current yard ready for the season ahead.

Summer: Festivals, Fairs, and Long Evenings

Summer is when Mid-Michigan truly shines. The days are long, the communities are active, and the festival calendar is packed with events that bring people together.

Fenton Freedom Festival

The Fenton Freedom Festival in July is one of the highlights of the summer. A multi-day celebration featuring a parade, live music, food vendors, and one of the best small-town fireworks displays you'll ever see. The community energy is infectious — families spread blankets along the parade route, kids chase each other between food trucks, and the whole downtown feels alive. It's the kind of event that makes you proud to live in Fenton.

Genesee County Fair

The Genesee County Fair is a true Michigan tradition — the oldest continuously operating fair in the state. Livestock shows, midway rides, live entertainment, demolition derbies, and all the fair food you can handle. It's been a summer staple for generations of Mid-Michigan families, and it captures something essential about the region's agricultural roots.

Michigan Challenge Balloonfest — Howell

The Michigan Challenge Balloonfest in Howell is a visual spectacle that draws visitors from across the state. Hot air balloons launch at dawn and dusk, creating a breathtaking display against the Michigan sky. The festival also includes a juried art fair, live music, and family activities. If you've never seen dozens of hot air balloons rise over the Livingston County countryside, it's worth the trip.

Summer Concerts and Outdoor Events

Nearly every community in Mid-Michigan hosts summer concert series and outdoor events. The Summer Concerts in Depot Park in Clarkston, the Fenton Concert Series, and events at Linden's Cedar Lake Park are among my personal favorites. There's something magical about warm summer evenings spent listening to live music in a park, surrounded by neighbors and friends. Arts, Beats & Eats — Royal Oak

A short drive from many of the Oakland County communities I serve, Arts, Beats & Eats in Royal Oak is one of the largest arts and music festivals in Michigan. Multiple stages, juried art booths, and a massive food court make it a full-day experience. It's worth the drive for anyone who loves live music and creative energy.

Fall: Cider Mills, Foliage, and Harvest Celebrations

Fall might be Mid-Michigan's most beautiful season. The foliage is spectacular, the air is crisp, and the cider mills are in full swing. This is the time of year when I remind clients why Michigan is called the Great Lakes State — not just for the water, but for the sense of vast, quiet beauty that settles over the landscape.

Spicer Orchards — Fenton

Spicer Orchards in Fenton is one of the most popular cider mills in the region, and for good reason. Fresh-pressed cider, warm donuts, apple picking, corn mazes, and a family-friendly atmosphere that makes it a fall tradition for thousands of families. On a sunny October Saturday, the orchard is packed with families enjoying the harvest season, and the drive out to the property — through the rolling hills of northern Genesee County — is beautiful in itself.

Parshallville Cider Mill — Hartland

For a quieter, more nostalgic cider mill experience, Parshallville Cider Mill in Hartland is a gem. Housed in a historic grist mill along the Huron River, it offers fresh cider and donuts in a setting that feels like stepping back in time. The surrounding countryside in Livingston County is gorgeous in autumn, making this a perfect day trip.

Michigan Renaissance Festival — Holly

The Michigan Renaissance Festival in Holly is one of the longest-running and most beloved Renaissance fairs in the country. Running weekends from late August through October, the festival transforms a wooded site outside Holly into a 16th-century village complete with jousting, artisan crafts, live entertainment, and enough turkey legs to satisfy a medieval army. It draws visitors from across the Midwest and is one of those quintessentially Michigan experiences that you have to experience at least once. Local Farms and Pumpkin Patches

Beyond the big-name cider mills, Mid-Michigan is dotted with family farms offering pumpkin patches, hayrides, corn mazes, and fall-themed activities. Many of these farms are in the rural areas between the communities I serve — in Lapeer, Shiawassee, and Tuscola Counties — and visiting them is one of the best ways to experience the agricultural heritage of the region.

Winter: Holiday Lights and Community Spirit

Michigan winters are long, but Mid-Michigan communities embrace the season with warmth and creativity. Holiday events transform downtowns and neighborhoods into winter wonderlands.

Holly Dickens Festival

The Holly Dickens Festival is one of my personal favorites and one of the most unique holiday events in Michigan. Downtown Holly transforms into a Victorian Christmas village every December. Period costumes, carolers, horse-drawn carriage rides, gaslight-style luminaries, and enough holiday spirit to fill a Hallmark movie. The entire downtown participates — shops open with special holiday offerings, restaurants serve seasonal menus, and the streets fill with visitors from across the region. It's genuinely magical, and it's one of the reasons Holly is such a special community.

Grand Blanc Holiday Parade and Tree Lighting

Grand Blanc's annual holiday parade and tree lighting ceremony captures the warmth of small-town Michigan during the holidays. Families gather along the main street, hot cocoa flows, and the countdown to the tree lighting is one of those moments that reminds you what community is all about. Downtown Fenton Holiday Shopping

Fenton's downtown shops embrace the holiday season with extended hours, special events, and the kind of personalized shopping experience that big-box stores can't replicate. Strolling the decorated storefronts on a cold December evening, picking up unique gifts from local artisans, and stopping for a warm meal at one of the downtown restaurants — it's the kind of holiday experience that makes small-town living feel like a gift in itself.

Oakland County Farmers Market — Holiday Edition

The Oakland County Farmers Market in Waterford continues into the holiday season, offering fresh produce, baked goods, and handcrafted gifts. It's a wonderful spot to find one-of-a-kind holiday gifts while supporting local vendors.
